EUROPEAN REFERENDUM INITIATIVE

Newsletter – 24 April, 2008

Thank you for your interest in the European Referendum Initiative and welcome to our first campaign newsletter!

The official launch of the new website and the release of our first press statement took place on 3rd March. Since then, support for the campaign has been growing rapidly and, in recognition of this, we will shortly be expanding the site to include a version in Italian, thus taking the number of languages covered to a total of seven. Additional languages are planned to follow in due course.

Early indications suggest that our call for referendums on the Lisbon Treaty is shared by a staggering 97 per cent of visitors to the website. Of course, whilst we accept that the Quick Poll feature on the site is not scientific, we think it would be extremely foolish for any politician in Europe to pretend to him or herself that the majority of European citizens are happy about being denied a referendum on this issue.

After all, the politicians know, just as we do, that last November, for the thirteenth year in a row, the EU's auditors refused to sign off its financial accounts citing errors of legality and presumed attempts at fraud.

Then, only a few weeks ago, EU politicians were openly accused of fraud and embezzlement on a massive scale and an official investigation was launched that could potentially lead to the imprisonment of a number of MEPs.

Not surprisingly therefore, politicians are becoming more and more aware that voters are increasingly opposed to the direction that the European Union is now heading in.

And no wonder. A Europe where political policy decisions are persistently made against the will of the people and where corruption, fraud and an overall lack of accountability are becoming increasingly rife amongst the political elite will never have the full support of its citizens.

Judging by the regular flow of emails we are receiving, we see that we are not alone in thinking it is high time that ordinary citizens are given a direct say in the way that the EU is developing.

Clearly, if Europe is to avoid turning into an outright dictatorship, its leaders must, as a matter of urgent priority, correct the dangerous democratic deficiency that results from allowing citizens a mere one vote - to elect their political representatives - every four or five years. In our opinion, this is not nearly enough in any political system that still professes to be a democracy.

What we want to see is for citizens to have the right to vote in referendums whenever significant changes to laws affecting them are made at either national or European level.

But we need your help to make this happen.

For example, have you told your family and friends about the campaign yet? If not, you could perhaps start by forwarding them this newsletter…

And remember, in addition to our headline petition – demanding a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty – we're also running a petition for a 'Europe for the People, by the People' and a 'Referendum for Natural Remedies' campaign. So please do consider signing all three, if you haven't already done so. Click on the right-hand sidebar boxes on the website to learn more about them.

History teaches us that the most dangerous time for any democracy is when citizens see their rights being removed but, instead of taking action, sit back and allow it to happen.

Please therefore help us to remind the European Union that any political system must retain the support and respect of its citizens, rather than their resentment, or else it will perish.

Thank you for your support!
